Career Paths With an Accounting Degree

Earning a degree in accounting prepares you to work in this field, and if you go on to get your master’s degree, you can take the certified public accounting test in your state, which allows you to earn more money and take on jobs with increasing responsibilities in the accounting world. Not all accountants do the same job, though. The job you’ll do depends on your specialty, which can include a wide range of fields outside of accounting. Let’s take a look at some of your options as an accounting.

Accounting Specialties

According to reports, over a million people in the United States work as accountants. Obviously, they don’t all do the same jobs every day. You could, for example, work as a bookkeeper, where you’ll typically work for one company, ensuring that employers are paid on time, your accounts are handled properly, inventory is managed, and your budget is on track. You could also work in tax preparation. In this field, you’ll help businesses and individuals file their taxes at the end of each year, and you’ll also help self-employed individuals and business manage their taxes throughout the year. Accountants also working in investing, helping people understand their options for stocks, savings accounts, retirement funds, and more. Some accountants also work as auditors, reviewing company accounts to ensure that the law is upheld. This is just scratching the surface – as you can see, there are tons of specialties within the accounting field.

Accounting in Other Fields

Many accountants work within a specific field, since the law is complex and varies by industry. For example, you could specialize in non-profit accounting. Charities and other non-profit organizations have special rights and must follow different taxation laws than most other businesses and individuals. You could also get a joint degree in accounting and law, which prepares you to work more closely with understanding accounting-related laws. Accountants working with businesses do different work than accountants working with individuals as well, so you might want to specialize in one or the other.

Consulting

Not all accountants work directly with people, helping to manage their money. Some accountants instead serve as consultants, helping clients prepare for IRS audits, working on court cases that involve business matters, and helping new business find start-up funding. Accountants can also work as consultants in fields like politics and government.
